Up to 32 hours over 2 to 4 days. No out of hours. Advanced feline medicine support.
If you are craving clinical freedom without sacrificing your evenings and weekends
If you love medicine, enjoy a varied caseload, but do not want your life dictated by out of hours and endless weekends, this could be the balance you have been looking for.
The Opportunity
We are working with a long-established, purpose-built small animal practice in Basingstoke that has quietly built something special over more than 50 years. This is not a revolving-door clinic. It is a stable, sociable team with a loyal client base and the time, tools and trust to do cases properly.
They are looking for a Veterinary Surgeon who enjoys both consults and surgery, is confident with abdominal ultrasound, and values collaboration. You will be joining a genuinely friendly team that includes an Advanced Practitioner in Feline Medicine and colleagues working towards certificates. Clinical freedom is protected, but you are never on your own when you need a second opinion.
This is a part-time role of up to 32 hours across 2, 3 or 4 days, with a 1 in 4 Saturday rota and no out of hours. It is designed to give you space to thrive professionally and personally.
Why This Role Is Different
A Practice Built for Quality Care
Purpose-built facilities with two surgical theatres, a dedicated nurse consult room, separate cat waiting areas, and on-site parking with dog walking space.
Modern diagnostics include digital radiography with bucky table, dental radiography, a new ultrasound machine, endoscopy, rhinoscopy, and a fully equipped in-house laboratory. This is a team that invests in doing things well.
A Strong Medical Focus
The caseload includes a broad mix of dogs, cats, rabbits and exotics such as guinea pigs, chinchillas, tortoises and birds.
Abdominal ultrasound is an essential part of the medical workup here, and cardiac ultrasound experience would be welcomed. You will be supported by colleagues with interests in feline internal medicine, surgery, ophthalmology and exotics.
A Culture of Learning, Not Ego
Daily rounds, regular in-house training, and structured clinical governance meetings mean cases are discussed openly and constructively.
Certificates and further qualifications are actively encouraged and financially supported. As part of a respected wider group, there are strong links to referral hospitals while maintaining real clinical autonomy in practice.
Stability and Community
A large, long-standing client base built over five decades.
The team supports local charities and offers work experience placements, reflecting a genuine commitment to the community and the future of the profession.
Your Journey Here
In Your First Month
You will focus on integrating into the team, understanding practice protocols, and building trust with clients. You will begin managing consults and routine surgeries with support readily available.
By Three Months
You will be confidently working up medical cases, using ultrasound as part of your diagnostic toolkit, contributing to case discussions, and identifying CPD that aligns with your interests.
By Six Months
You will be an established, valued voice within the team. You may be progressing towards a certificate, developing a niche interest, or shaping aspects of clinical standards within the practice.
